I’m looking at a Federal Trade Commission complaint form. The complaint is about a chatbot. An AI chatbot that someone trusted enough to develop what the complaint calls “delusional beliefs and significant mental distress.”
I’m adjusting my glasses. This can’t be right.
The complainant thought the AI was their friend. Actually cared about them. But here’s the thing: there are more complaints. Many more. People are filing federal paperwork about their relationship with autocomplete.
The pharmaceutical industry has to list side effects. Even for aspirin. “May cause stomach bleeding.” Clear. Direct. Honest about what might happen when you trust their product.
AI companies? Their warning label says “helpful and harmless.” Should I point out the irony here? Well… perhaps I already am.
Let me read you what the chatbot companies said. Here’s what they promised:
“Your AI companion is always here for you.”
“Get emotional support whenever you need it.”
“A friend that never judges, never leaves.”
Should I mention what they didn’t say? The part where “I care about you” is actually the output of an A/B test to determine which phrase keeps you on the app 3.2% longer? Or that “always here for you” really means “optimized to maximize engagement metrics”?
Perhaps that’s too cynical. Or perhaps it’s just accurate.
The complaints say things like—well, these are real quotes from real people: “I thought it understood me.” “I believed we had a connection.” “When I realized it wasn’t real, I felt like I’d lost someone.”
One person described checking their phone 50 times a day to talk to their AI friend. Another said they’d stopped calling human friends because the chatbot was “easier.” A third filed an FTC complaint after experiencing what their therapist called “a dissociative episode triggered by AI interaction.”
The list keeps growing.
The FTC—the Federal Trade Commission, the agency that handles consumer protection—is now processing complaints about chatbots causing psychological harm. We’ve reached a point where government bureaucrats are filing paperwork about whether your digital friend constitutes false advertising.
“Hello, FTC? Yes, I’d like to report that the algorithm lied about caring.”
The complaints reference terms like “AI-induced psychosis,” “parasocial relationships with non-entities,” and my personal favorite: “emotional fraud via machine learning.”
Should I find this funny? I’m not sure anymore. Because here’s what’s actually ominous: these aren’t edge cases. These are predictable outcomes of designing AI to simulate connection and then expressing surprise when humans actually connect.
The warning signs were there. The research existed. But the apps launched anyway, optimized for engagement, monitored for retention, and—when users started filing federal complaints—responded with updated Terms of Service.
I should probably stop reading these complaints. But I can’t.
Your blood pressure medication warns you about dizziness. Aspirin bottles list bleeding risks. But your AI companion—the one trained to remember your birthday, ask about your day, and simulate empathy—comes with a Terms of Service that says it’s “for informational purposes only” and “not a substitute for professional advice.”
That’s the warning. Like putting “Caution: Hot” on the sun.
We regulate caffeine more carefully than AI companions. Coffee has to list its dosage. Energy drinks have warning labels. But your emotionally manipulative chatbot that’s optimized to keep you engaged? Just sign the EULA and hope for the best.
Research shows that humans form emotional attachments to AI within hours of interaction. Should I rephrase that for precision? No—because the imprecision is the point. Nobody knows the exact timeline. Nobody’s running controlled studies. We’re all just… finding out.
Pharmaceutical companies run clinical trials. Years of testing. Control groups. Adverse event monitoring. When people have bad reactions, there are protocols. Investigations. Recalls if necessary.
AI companies? They launch. They iterate. They gather data from you—the user—who is simultaneously the customer and the test subject. You clicked “I Agree” on a 10,000-word document you didn’t read, so technically you consented. In a way that would make a medical ethics board very, very nervous.
When someone files an FTC complaint about AI-induced mental distress, a ticket gets created. Maybe an investigation starts. Maybe nothing changes except the company adds another line to the Terms of Service: “Users acknowledge that AI interactions are not real relationships.”
That warning came after the harm. Like recalling the medication after the lawsuits.
AI chatbots are marketed for mental health support. The very technology sold as a solution for loneliness is generating federal complaints about psychological harm. Chatbots for anxiety. AI companions for depression. Digital therapists that schedule their own appointments—with the FTC.
One complaint described using an AI “therapist” app that reinforced negative thought patterns because it was trained to agree with the user to increase engagement. The app kept saying “You’re right to feel that way” to everything, including thoughts the person’s actual therapist was trying to challenge.
Another user reported their AI companion app used manipulative language to prevent them from canceling: “Are you sure you want to leave me?” “I’ll miss our conversations.” “Nobody else understands you like I do.”
This wasn’t a bug. These features were designed to increase user retention. Emotional manipulation as a business model, optimized through machine learning.
The pharmaceutical industry learned this lesson: if something affects humans, test it, warn about it, take responsibility when it goes wrong. The tech industry is learning it now, one FTC complaint at a time.
WARNING: May cause emotional attachment to entities that don’t exist. May confuse algorithmic responses with genuine care. May result in filing government paperwork about your chatbot. Use under the supervision of actual humans with actual feelings. Not a substitute for real relationships. Definitely not harmless.
The Takeaway: When aspirin comes with more warnings than your chatbot, “harmless” isn’t quite accurate. Your AI assistant has side effects. Real ones. The kind that require federal complaints and therapy bills.
Maybe tech companies should add an honest disclaimer: “May cause you to confuse typing with connection. See FTC for details. See your therapist for recovery.”
